Snake Neck Turtles Rote Back to Habitat

Rote Ndao District has a unique reptile species found nowhere else in the world. Reptiles are Snake Neck Turtles Chelodina Rote or mccordi. Reptiles include the order testudines of family and subfamily chelidae Chelodina.

Small turtle neck length is expressed as a new species in 1994 after research carried out by scientific institutes in cooperation with the Ministry of Forestry. This species is a fraction of C. Novaeguineae.
Unfortunately, due to be traded, a turtle neck snake no longer in the Rote Ndao. Community Rote Ndao even been forgotten by the existence of this tortoise. Endemic reptiles that lived in Lake and Lake Enduy Naluk Rote Island is actually bred in other areas.

For the species is not extinct, the Forestry Department sees the need to restore these turtles in their habitat on the island of Rote for population increase in its habitat.

Turtle conservation efforts are based on the mandate of Law No. 5 / 1990 on Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems, PP/8/1999 about Utilization of Plants and Wildlife, Permenhut no. P.19/Menhut-II/2005 of Captive Wild Return to chapter X of Natural Habitats (restocking) and Status Full Captive Animals.

According to the plan, a turtle neck snake Rote intended for release in Lake in the Village area Maubesi Peto, District Roteng, Rote Ndao District. Species of snake neck turtle Rote which will be returned to its habitat on the island of Rote as many as 40 individuals. These turtles will be released in the lake Peto as an alternative to the lake to be used as the location of the tortoise habitat.

Snake neck turtle adults can reach sizes of 15-25 cm and has a carapace (shell) is unique with a side of carapace curved upward. Reptiles are often found in stores in the place of origin of animals even though they are difficult to find.
