After you select the appropriate species and to buy equipment such as aquariums and accessories, aquarium preparation steps necessary before you can insert the fish into the aquarium decorations. These measures should be taken to ensure that you are able to maintain the ornamental fish for the first time.

Steps To Prepare Fish Aquarium Decoration

1. First clean the containers / Ornamental Fish Aquarium

You need to clean the aquarium with the newly purchased water to make sure dust or dirt in the aquarium is not to be toxic to the ornamental fish you later. The most beautiful clean with water flowing like a hose pipe. Once finished cleaning, put the aquarium in a place that you want.

2. Put Water Filter

After you install a water filter that includes all the type of machine you choose. Make sure you put a water filter boxes (berspan) in the right place. If no water will drip out of the aquarium.

3. Enter Stone Decoration (if necessary)

Put decorative stones if necessary to play or where the fish shelter. Ornamental stone is sometimes made to feel the fish as if it were in the river or natural habitat.

You can enter the home furnishings such as water mills, houses an artificial, ornamental plants, etc. if necessary. Make sure that the decoration was not causing other ornamental fish aquarium into fiber / full of decorations so that the fish did not appear. Your main objective is to preserve the ornamental fish and aquariums is not decorating.

5. Insert Accessories Needed

Accessories are meant here is like the air filter, temperature gauge (thermometer), measuring the ph of water and light. You only need to install this accessory if you need it and ornamental fish will die if this accessory is not available. Make sure you ask the seller of ornamental fish to the needs of fish you want to keep.

Tiger Hillstream Loach Sewellia Lineolata

The Tiger Hillstream Loach (Sewellia lineolata) is a curious tropical fish of extraordinary beauty. The unique physical features of the Tiger Hillstream Loach reflect life adapted to fast-flowing streams. The flattened body is a special adaptation that gives the Tiger Hillstream Loach an extremely hydrodynamic shape. This streamlined body shape helps the Tiger Hillstream Loach navigate (or stay put) in very strong currents with minimal effort.

Scientific Name: Sewellia lineolata
Common name: Gold Ring Butterfly Sucker, Reticulated Hillstream Loach, Tiger Hillstream Loach
Synonyms: Balitora lineolata, Sewellia lineolata
Distribution: Vietnam.

Sexual Dimorphism: Females plumper than males. Males have raised areas like small "fences" on first few rays of pectoral fins, and when viewed from above are noticeably "squarer" in the area of the front leading edge of the pectoral fins.

Maximum size: 2.5 inches

Similar to: Sewellia pterolineata

Tiger Hillstream Loach Care : Inhabit fast flowing streams over boulders. Aquarium must duplicate these conditions as fish have very high oxygen requirements. All need excellent water-flow and aeration, numerous rocky hiding places and smooth pebbles and boulders to graze over. Lighting should be bright to encourage algae growth in the aquarium. Plants are not necessary as the fish do not normally encounter them in the wild, but they will help with water-quality. Suitable plants for high-flow environments are Anubias and Microsoreum. These will grow on rock-work or driftwood.
Feeding : Note these algae eaters fish have smaller mouths than Gastromyzon species which should be a consideration with foodstuffs. Good quality flake, sinking pellets, algae wafers, thawed frozen Bloodworm, Mysis Shrimp, blanched Spinach, Kale, natural algae an advantage.

Water parameters: pH:6.5 - 7.5. Hardness: Medium

Temperature: 68ºF to 75ºF (20-23.8°C)
Breeding: In 2006 these fish were bred in aquaria for the first time although the full details of their courtship and breeding methods have yet to be witnessed.

It is critical to maintain high water quality and aeration plus strong water movement to ensure the health of the Tiger Hillstream Loach. The Tiger Hillstream Loach should not be housed in a tropical aquarium setup with water temperatures consistently above 75 degrees Fahrenheit. A recommended minimum tank of 30 gallons should be provided to house the Tiger Hillstream Loach.

Supplement the diet of the Tiger Hillstream Loach with foods that sink to the bottom of the aquarium such as a high-quality flake food, sinking carnivore pellets, sinking algae wafers, freeze-dried bloodworms, and tubifex worms.

Justifiably regarded by most Tiger Hillstream Loach enthusiasts as the most beautiful of all algae eaters species, Sewellia lineolata remains an ambition for many.

This species does not travel well and often shipments may perish in transit. The species very high oxygen requirements means that shippers are learning to pack less fish per bag. This raises the overall freight costs per fish and hence increases the price at the retail level.

If the hobbyist can afford to purchase these fish, they must protect their investment by providing the best quality environment possible. Given these conditions, fish that have survived import will usually settle down and acclimatize well to aquarium life. Also, unlike many other Sucker-bodied Tiger Hillstream Loaches, they seem far more at ease when searching for food on the loose surface of sand or fine gravel, and will flutter their fins, disturbing the surface grains.

Tips For Installing And Maintaining Water Gardens

Water gardens, also known as aquatic gardens and garden ponds, are miniature ecosystems They add charm, enthusiasm and a sense of tranquility to any place

Water gardens can be created by combining a pool with aquatic plants and ornamental fish Rocks, waterfalls etc when combined with pools add to the beauty of the gardens Water gardens can be man-made or natural, comprising the right blend of flora (plants) and fauna (animals)

Pond Plants

Water gardens have plants such as submerged plants, marginal plants and floating plants Submerged plants are those that grow completely under water Marginal plants have their roots deep into the soil but the plant grows above the surface of water Floating plants grow freely floating on the water surface The submerged plants in the ponds often act as oxygenators and provide oxygen to the fish in ponds A garden pond requires at least one oxygenator and a lily plant

Aquatic Animals

Water gardens look colorful with fish like Koi, Gold Fish, Golden Orfe, Golden Tench, Mosquito Fish etc Water ponds also attract snails, frogs and other predators Some predators such as snakes can be dangerous to the fish in the pond

Requirements For Water Gardens

There are certain points that need to be considered when installing water gardens Some of them are -

  • 1 Sunlight – Most water plants need enough sunlight to grow Hence it is recommended to install the water pond at a place where there is enough sunlight In case of shadier places, the choice of plants is limited

2 Trees – Having a water pond near a tree is not preferable The dried leaves from the tree may fall into the water and harm the aquatic plants and animals

3 Location – The location of a garden pond should be such that it can be easily viewed and enjoyed It is recommended to install it in places near the windows or in places easily viewable from the terrace etc

4 Size – Size of the water garden should suit the size of the garden A small garden will not look good with a large water pond

Maintenance of A Water Garden

Since the garden ponds contain plants and animals living in them, just creating water gardens is not enough They require regular maintenance Maintenance of ponds includes filtering the water, pumping, preventing the formation of algae etc

Equipments Used For Maintenance Of Water Gardens

Pond Pumps – Pond pumps provide water enriched with oxygen to the plants and animals in the pond While choosing a pond pump do consider the operating cost of the pump as well along with the pump cost

Pond Filters – Pond filters mainly function to filter the water in the pond Fish and other aquatic animals living in water pollute the water due to their regular metabolic activities If the impurities are left behind, the water gets polluted thereby causing harm to the plants and animals in the pond

Ultraviolet clarifier – Ultraviolet clarifier (UVC) is used to prevent algae that result in green murky water The algae remove the oxygen from pond water and hence may cause death of fish in the pond UVCs are usually included in most pond filters It is important to note that UVC contains quartz tubes since that doubles the efficiency of the UVC

With proper planning and maintenance, water gardens can be your source of joy and pride
