Swim Test for Beach Area

Thank you for your interest in the GVL Swim Test.  This test is administered to swimmers under the age of 13 years who wish to access the deep area raft.  The distance from raft to raft is about 160 feet.  The test assists the lifeguards in determining the proficiency of those wishing to swim in deeper water.

The test is approximately 125 feet in length.  The swimmer is asked to demonstrate proficiency of their swim stroke.  The lifeguards look for the following skills:
      1.  an acceptable over arm swim stroke which that is maintained from start to finish
              a.  arm (hand) pull
              b.  flutter kick
              c.  body position and movement
      2.  sufficient cardio-pulmonary endurance
              a.  lack of labored breathing
              b.  lack of fatigue
              c.  appropriate skin pallor
      3.  ability to float on back with no arm or leg movement
      4.  confidence in their own abilities

It is necessary for the guards to have confidence that each swimmer can return from the deep raft in a safe and expedient manner.  In the event of a medical emergency, the guards may not be able to give their full attention to those swimmers in the deep area when asked to exit the lake.  In the case of a nearby lightening strike, the swimmers would also be expected to be able to clear the area quickly.

We have found the GVL Swim Test to be sucessful in providing a safe environment for all our patrons.

Have a great summer!
